Freshman Fifteen: The College Student Tool Box

Posted by TomKnapp in Education

When it comes time to preparing your freshman for college, the list may seem endless - from towels and dishes to furniture and clothes. And you may find yourself returning to the store for items that slipped your mind. Something that may have slipped your mind altogether is a college toolbox. Your budding adult may not be the handiest of the group, but a basic tool kit will come in handy for the million and one little projects your freshman may have to tackle during this new season of life.

1. Hammer

This is a must-have for anyone. Don’t think huge framing hammer. A small, lightweight craft or hobby hammer will do nicely for all the little projects that may come up - like hanging pictures on the walls.

2. Screwdrivers

Consider a medium-sized Phillips head and a small- to medium-sized flat head for the college tool box. Your freshman will use them to remove battery covers, open a paint can lid, and actually drive a screw into something.

3. Pliers

A medium-sized pair of pliers will come in handy when it comes time to put together that easy-to-assemble desk. They’re also ideal for adjusting a million in one things or removing a stubborn jar lid.

4. Adjustable Wrench

While the wrench may not be a tool that your college student uses often, it will be useful for tightening a loose bolt on a bed, desk, or closet door. Adjustable wrenches are an economical one-size-fits-all tool rather than purchasing a full set of wrenches in various sizes.

5. Utility Knife

The indispensable utility knife is the tool of choice for endless projects such as cutting carpet remnants, art assignments, and any other projects that require cutting through a thick or layered surface. They’re also ideal for cutting open care packages from home.

6. Duct Tape

The ultimate repair tool, duct tape can be used on nearly anything that needs repairing - from books to bags. Duct tape is also great for hanging posters and securing a loose sole to your freshman’s favorite pair of sneakers.

7. Putty Knife

When school comes to an end, and it’s time to take down the pictures hanging on the walls, the putty knife is the tool of choice for fixing the holes with some putty. An inexpensive item, the putty knife is priceless investment for those who want their security deposits refunded.

8. Assortment of Screws

The local hardware store offers a small assortment of screws in a variety of sizes. You may never know for what they may come in handy.

9. Finish Nails

If you’ve got a bevy of pictures to hang, finish nails are ideal, as they cause minimal wall damage and leave a very small hole.

10. Flash Light

Hopefully, your freshman won’t find himself or herself in the dark, but in case of a power outage due to storm or some unexplainable freshman mishap, your student won’t be left in the dark with a sturdy flash light.

11. Extension Cords

The college student’s best friend, extension cords are a must for the tech collection that invariably will make its way to school with your freshman. Most dorm rooms were not constructed with plentiful electrical outlets, so bring along plenty of extension cords.

12. Surge Protectors

Likely you spent most of the dough that is your child’s electronic collection. Make sure it’s protected with a surge protector.

13. Three Prong Adapters

Some dorms on older campuses were not constructed with electrical outlets with grounds, which means appliances, hair dryers, computers, etc. with three-prong plugs are not going to fit. Just in case, pick up a couple adapters to be prepared.

14. Broom & Dustpan

These may not be considered tools, but cleaning supplies are a must, even if you think your freshman won’t use them. If nothing else, the broom and dustpan will hopefully be there when it comes time to pack up and move out.

15. Plastic Totes

From small to large, plastic totes are ideal for storing all sorts of items, from clothes to food, and keeping things organized. Small totes are great for storing cosmetics, jewelry, toiletries, and cleaning supplies.

Online Criminal Justice Degrees – The Time Is Now

Posted by KennethEchie in Education

Come close! I want to share a few secrets with you.

Come closer! I don’t want too many people to hear this.

OK! Close enough.

I know the anticipation is killing you. You have to promise not to share these secrets with too many people.

Promise?

OK!

If you have been aspiring to get a degree in criminal justice, this is the perfect time for it. You will only be hurting yourself in the long run if you continue to put it off.

Why you ask?

There are three main reasons why you should embark on getting your criminal justice degree right now. In this article, I will share those three main reasons.

They are as follows:

1. The Bad Economy

You must be wondering what the bad economy has to do with getting a degree in criminal justice. This is one of the big secrets. One famous investor said money is made in investing when there is blood in the Street.

This same principle is applied in education. When the economy is bad, smart people get more education.

Why fight for the few jobs that are available out there. All you need to do is take advantage of all the opportunities you have to get more education. Look into grants, scholarships, employer sponsored educational opportunities, to name a few, to get yourself more education.

If you have high school diploma, get a certificate or associate degree. If you have an associate degree, get a bachelor’s degree. If you have a bachelor’s degree, get a masters degree. I think you get the point.

You see, the education you get while the economy is bad will make you a hot commodity when the economy turns around. With economic turnaround, layoffs become hiring frenzy. With the increase in economic activities, employers can not find enough qualified people to fill their vacancies. The people with the right education will have money thrown at them by employers. You will reap the benefits of the time and money you invested into getting more education.

2. You can do it online

People are taking advantage of this big time. With gas prices over $4 per gallon, a lot of people have simply chosen to get their degrees through distance learning.

And why not?

The gas money you save can pay for a few credits online. You can not just brush this off any more. Years ago, some people would trade the price of commute for the chance to interact with others in the classroom. Not anymore. The gas price has made the choice easier for them.

3. Security Will Remain Paramount

There will be no going back on the need to keep America and Americans safe. This is why a criminal justice degree will be one of best professions to get into right now.

As long as there are people out there trying to hurt Americans, the government will always have the need to have criminal justice professionals. The need may not seem as strong right now because of the depressed economy, but make no mistake about it the need is there.

This need will be greater when the depressed economy turns around. Private sectors will loosen their wallets to hiring more security people.

And who will they hire?

They will hire people with the right education and expertise. These people will command premium pay because of the demand that will be out there.

I could go on, but I believe I have made my point. If you are interested in getting a degree in criminal justice, stop sitting on the fence. This is as good a time as any to get started.

What Are the Aspects That Would Make Language Learning Much Easier?

Posted by BenedictSmythe in Education

Learning foreign languages can be easy especially for toddlers who have recently moved to a different country. For adults, this task could require double or triple the effort that children put into learning a new language.

The key to successfully learning any foreign language is to set goals and to write them down. Learning to speak a second language is no different from dieting or running a marathon. It requires goal-setting, time and much effort. Whatever his purpose is, each learner must be ready to give these elements of learning so that he can successfully overcome obstacles that would surely come his way.

Learning by Listening

One of the most essential parts of learning is to listen. A person who listens well would most likely achieve more than people who just hear things. Listening to how words are pronounced would effectively help anyone in eventually speaking the language. There are many ways to listen to a new language:

• By listening to a native who is speaking the language.

• By purchasing cassette tapes or audio CDs that aim to teach a different language.

• By listening to foreign songs—for example, a person who wants to learn Italian should concentrate on Italian songs.

• Listening to radio stations that play foreign languages.

Foreign Language Programs and Classes

There are now numerous foreign language centers throughout the world. These schools teach the basics of language. There are also advance classes for those who would want to dig deeper into the language that they are learning. The most common enrollees of these schools are frequent travelers like businessmen and tourists.

Those who have married a foreigner also frequent these schools. Agencies like the CIA and the FBI rely upon language training centers for their agents to learn many new languages.

Classes can be held in training rooms inside the schools but there are more schools now that also offer distance learning.

Online Language Learning

There are hundreds of web sites that currently offer courses on different languages. There downloadable e-books that teach the principles and rules of any language and also the general course curriculum. There are also online audio tools that can be accessed by those who learn better through listening. In addition to these methods, there are also sets of software that can aid anyone to learn a new language. Some of these are free of charge while some can be purchased at a meager fee.

Most of these web sites that offer to teach foreign language are interactive and user-friendly so there should not be any problems for anyone who is not into technical stuff.

Practice is Still the Best Method

Speaking fluently does not come easily especially for people who are learning a different language. It can only come through constant practice as the more a person speaks the language; the better he would be at becoming more fluent. Speaking like a local could only be achieved through hard work. Verbal language is the best teacher for anyone who is aiming to speak with confidence.

A combination of two or more of these aspects of learning is necessary for every student who wants to speak a different language. Coupled with goal setting, any language will be proven conquerable.

The language machine offers a wide variety of language courses including Spanish, German, Italian and French Lessons London.

Learn the Most Basic Context of Italian and Some Common Italian Words

Posted by BenedictSmythe in Education

About 63 million people have Italian or Italiano as their native tongue. It is primarily spoken in Italy but other places that have Italian language spoken among other languages are Switzerland, Marino, and the Vatican City. Minorities speak Italian from nations like Croatia, France, Romania, and Slovenia.

Former colonies such as Ethiopia, Somalia, Libya and Eritrea also speak the language. Most important of all, immigrants who have gone to places like Venezuela, the US, Australia, Argentina, Germany, France, Uruguay and Canada also help in spreading the language.

What Makes the Italian Alphabet Unique

Most Romance languages have long given up the contrast on long and short consonants in Latin. But just like most Romance languages, Italian also has a distinct stress. Italian is considered to be the closest language that would resemble the dead language—Latin. Its lexical similarity to French is at 89%; 87% for Catalan; Sardinian is at 85%; Spanish is at 82%; 77% with the Romanian language and 52% with Maltese.

Referred to as il parlar gentile or the gentle language by its speakers, Italian continues to make use of the Latin alphabet on majority of its words. The standard Italian alphabet does not have the letters J, K, W, X and Y. But nowadays, X is quite common in some words, so do words that have the extra letter- J. J is often read as I in most Italian words and is evident on the names of places like Bojano (pronounced Bo-ya-no), Joppolo (Iopolo) or Jesi (Iesi).

J is now discouraged in modern Italian and is no longer a part of the contemporary Italian alphabet. The current alphabet now has 21 letters with each of these letters having an Italian equivalent such as in the case of gi for j; c or ch for k; s, ss, or cs for x; u or v for w; and i for y.

Accents are very important with the Italian language. It is evident on the acute accent that is being used on the letter E (for example: perch
